If you have already tried to enlarge an image of which you only have a small size, you have probably noticed that the quality degrades during the process. You get a pixelated result, often unusable for the purpose you need.
In this article, we will show you how to enlarge a photo without losing quality.
There are online tools that allow you to upscale an image without losing quality, we will present you a free version here. For those who have Photoshop, it is also possible to use it to enlarge your image while reworking it to find the quality of your original image. Nothing very complicated if you respect the steps described in the article.
This first solution is an online service offering the advantage of not having anything to download or install on your computer.
Waifu2x is based on a neural network algorithm to upscale images.
Beware, Waifu2x works mainly for Anime style drawings, i.e. images with little detail.
Two options to select your image:

The famous Adobe software can allow you to enlarge an image of 1,5 to 2,5 times. In order not to lose quality, we advise you to follow our tips.
Play with the colorimetry :
The dialog box Levels will allow you to optimize the light and dark areas of the image. Be sure not to crop the image. Clipping is the act of altering the histogram of the image and therefore the color information in the image. The histogram represents the distribution mode of the pixels: it traces the number of pixels relative to each level of intensity of the color. It indicates the level of detail of dark, medium, and light tones.
So display your Histogram panel and monitor the information about the image you are working on.
To do this, go to Window > Histogram or click on the
Histogram tab to display the panel.
Adjust the hue and saturation:
Simply desaturating the image slightly can help restore the original hues to saturated colors with the next step. Some color tones are particularly disturbing your image ? Think of desaturating them too.
Enlarge your image :
Go to Menu > Image > Image size
Increase the size of your image between 150 and 250 % without going beyond that, otherwise the tips mentioned will not be enough to recreate the grain of the original photo.
Working with blur : optimized blur – selective gaussian blur
When enlarging your image, a moirure appears (moirure is an alteration of the color which gives it a shimmering aspect).
To correct this:
- Go to Menu
- Click on Filter
– In Attenuation click on surface blur
The goal is not to touch the contours but to smooth the full areas of the image.
Keeping the grain of a picture while enlarging it is not possible, the goal is to recreate it.
– Go to Menu
– Click on Filter > Noise > Add Noise
Adjust the level until you recreate the original grain of your photo.
Once you are satisfied with the result, export your image in the desired format.
